FROM THE ARCHIVE

Choose an AI model for the job it must do.

A model decision should reflect the task, the review burden, and the operating context.

Retrospective editionPrepared for this archive on The edition date identifies its place in the weekly series.

I do not think a business should choose its AI approach by following a leaderboard alone. A model that performs well in one situation may be unnecessarily costly or unsuitable in another. The useful starting point remains the task and the evidence needed to trust its result.

Describe the acceptance criteria first

Define what a useful answer looks like, which mistakes matter, and how quickly the result is needed. Include the information the system is allowed to use and the conditions under which it must ask for help. Those criteria make a comparison more meaningful than a general debate about which model is strongest.

Compare the complete workflow

The model is one part of the service. Retrieval, permissions, review, and the way a result is presented can all affect usefulness. I would compare candidate approaches on representative tasks while tracking the effort required to check and correct their outputs. A lower-cost response that creates more rework may not be the better operating choice.

Keep the choice reviewable

Document why the approach was selected and which changes would justify reconsidering it. Avoid creating an unnecessary dependency on a particular model where the business does not require one. At Genellipse, I want technical decisions to remain connected to the partner’s purpose. That means being able to explain the trade-off clearly and revise it when the evidence or the operating requirements change.

How Genellipse can help

Genellipse can help define a model evaluation around representative tasks, information constraints, and a complete cost-of-operation view. Our AI and data teams can compare suitable approaches and assess the supporting workflow. Cortex AI can be considered where governed model use and agent operations are required, with the choice tied to the agreed acceptance criteria.
