FROM THE ARCHIVE

University partnerships should create room for real learning.

Connecting academic curiosity with the care required in production work.

University collaboration is part of Genellipse’s story. Our original partnership material included institutions around the world, and our team profiles described contributors studying computer science, software engineering, and data science at the University of Waterloo. I see that connection as an opportunity for learning in both directions.

Bring students a meaningful problem

A good industry problem has context: who needs help, what constraints matter, and how success will be recognized. Students should have room to question the proposed solution, rather than receive only a list of implementation tasks. Experienced colleagues benefit too, because a fresh question can expose assumptions that a delivery team has stopped noticing.

Make supervision part of the design

I want academic collaboration to include clear mentoring, appropriate access to information, and regular discussion of the reasoning behind a result. A promising prototype should be evaluated before it becomes part of an operational service. Students deserve an environment where asking for help is expected and learning is not confused with having production responsibility.

Measure the learning as well as the output

A useful review looks at the technical result, the clarity of the documentation, and the skills developed through the work. It also asks what the company learned from the academic perspective. UNESCO’s guidance places human capacity at the centre of education and research involving generative AI. For Genellipse, that is a valuable reminder: the relationship should develop people as well as software.

How Genellipse can help

Genellipse can help frame an industry problem for academic participation, establish a manageable technical scope, and define how the work will be reviewed. Our university relationships create a setting for discussing suitable collaboration. A proposed engagement should specify mentoring, information access, ownership, and intended learning outcomes with the participating institution.
